Edit the story with the photographer.

Commissioned or pitched, a photo story is a conversation between a photographer and the desk. Have it on one table, with notes on the pixel and the sequence in plain sight.

What gets in the way

Selects by file name.

  1. Email threads of DSCF numbers.Contact sheets marked up in a PDF, “the one after the red car”, a reply-all with three versions of the edit.
  2. Which edit is current? The photographer's folder, the shared drive or the layout? Each has a different running order.
  3. Late changes lose their reason. The art director wants a vertical opener on Thursday; why is in someone's inbox.
How it works for you

One board per story.

The photographer brings the take, the desk brings the eye, and the running order is the board's reading order.

01

Open the story to the right people

The photographer uploads the take to the story's board. You decide who edits and who only looks.

  • Private by default. Invite by email; the link works for that address only.
  • Roles. Owner, editor, viewer. Viewers watch live and change nothing.
  • Or a link. Anyone with the link can view, or edit.

Notes with coordinates, tasks with a name

Pin the comment to the exact place on the photo. Mention the writer, assign the reshoot, resolve it when it's done.

  • Pinned to the pixel. Pins stay put when the photo moves or is resized.
  • Tasks. Assign a thread; it waits in their inbox until resolved.
  • Email too. Mentions and assignments arrive by email, linked to the pin.
The inbox: unread replies, conversations awaiting your reply and tasks assigned to you.

Sequence it together, live

Move the opener, try the closer, see each other's cursors. Headlines and captions can sit on the table as type.

  • Reading order is the running order. Left to right, row by row.
  • Sections. A titled frame per part of the story; running order goes section by section.
  • Text in one type system. Sizes, weights, italic, alignment, tone.

Show the editor-in-chief

A view-only link opens in any browser. The board updates live as the desk works, and the loupe shows the detail.

  • No account to look. Viewers need nothing installed.
  • Full screen. Space opens the loupe with camera details.
  • On a phone too. Pinch to zoom, tap a photo to open it, swipe through.
The loupe: one photograph full screen with its file name, its place in the sequence and its camera details.

Hand over to layout

Download the board as a ZIP: originals, numbered in running order. Or draft the story as spreads in the book editor.

  • Originals, as uploaded. Numbered in reading order, with a file describing the board.
  • Spreads. Layouts, free placement, page colours and type, live.
  • PDF. A print-ready file, or a lighter one to send round.

Tuesday at the picture deskA scenario to show how the pieces fit, not a customer quote.

Tuesday, ten o'clock: the photographer uploads 80 frames from the assignment into the story's board. By noon Iris has pinned eleven notes, mentioned the writer on a caption to check and assigned the photographer a vertical for the opener.

Thursday's meeting happens on the board: the editor-in-chief opens a view-only link and watches the sequence change. On Friday the ZIP goes to layout, already numbered in running order.
